The Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was a Soviet socialist republic that existed from 2 August 1940 to 27 August 1991, with Kishinev serving as its capital. The republic was formed from parts of Bessarabia, a region annexed from Romania on 28 July 1940, and parts of the Moldavian ASSR. Moldavia remained a part of the USSR until 23 June 1990, when it proclaimed its sovereignty, and it declared independence on 27 August 1991. The Moldavian SSR became independent as "Moldova", and Transnistria attempted to remain a part of the USSR, leading to the Transnistria War.
