Moinuddin al-Zeid

Moinuddin al-Zeid (1763-late August 1798) was the leader of the 1798 Cairo Revolt against the French First Republic during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Biography[]

Moinuddin al-Zeid was born in Cairo, Egypt, Ottoman Empire in 1763 to a family of Sunni Muslim Arabs, and he was sold into slavery as a mamluk slave-soldier at a young age. al-Zeid became a radical Islamist, and he decided to lead an army of 623 Cairenes in the Cairo Revolt against the French First Republic's rule in 1798. al-Zeid was killed when the French Revolutionary Army brutally crushed the uprising.
