Mohawk Valley

The Mohawk Valley is a region of the United States state of New York located along the Mohawk River. Schenectady, Utica, and Rome are located in the Mohawk Valley region, with the Dutch, Germans, and Scots colonizing the valley during the 18th century; Moraviantown and German Flatts have been named for the German settlers. The valley saw trade between the whites and the Native Americans such as the namesake Mohawk tribe and Iroquois Confederacy, but the American Revolutionary War saw violence as Tories (pro-crown loyalists), British Army soldiers, Canadian militia, and Iroquois tribesmen fought against the patriots and the settlers. Almost 100 battles of the revolution were fought in the Mohawk Valley, with the battle of Oriskany and the defense of Fort Stanwix being two battles.
