Mohammed Momand

Mohammed Momand (born 1950) was an Afghan Mujahideen leader.

Biography[]

Momand was born in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, and in 1975 he joined the Mujahideen. In 1980 he left for Afghanistan to repulse the invasion by the Soviet Union. Momand became the leader of a small group of fighters that resisted the USSR, and in the Battle of Khost in late 1986 he fought to maintain the Afghan base at the city.

In the battle, Momand resisted the Soviets, and survived the gunfight in the small wartorn village that left several Soviets and Mujahideen dead and two BTRs destroyed. After the war, Momand sided with the Northern Alliance in the Afghan Civil War.
