Mohammad Mofatteh (17 June 1928-18 December 1979) was an Iranian philosopher, theologian, and political activist at the time of the Iranian Revolution. In 1979, he was assassinated by the extremist Forqan Group.
Biography[]
Mohammad Mofatteh was born in Famenin, Iran in 1928 to a Shia Muslim family, and he studied at the Islamic seminary in Qom, where Ayatollah Khomeini was one of his teachers. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Tehran University, and he became a professor and dean there. Mofatteh soon became a religio-political activist, working for unity between the seminary and academic disciplines. He played a key role in familiarizing the new generation with Islamic issues, and he opposed the Shahist regime, leading to the SAVAK arresting and exiling him on several occasions. On 18 December 1979, he was shot four times in the head, shoulders, hands, and knees by Forqan Group gunmen in front of Tehran University's philosophy department, creating unity among Iran's seminaries and universities.
