Mohammad-Ali Rajai (15 June 1933-30 August 1981) was the President of Iran from 2 to 30 August 1981, succeeding Abolhassan Banisadr and preceding Ali Khamenei. He was assassinated by the People's Mujahideen of Iran in the Hashteh-Shahrivar bombing of 1981.
Biography[]
Rajai was born in Qazvin in Persia, and took part in the 1979 Iranian Revolution against the Kingdom of Iran. Rajai became Prime Minister of Iran in 1980, and in 1981, after the impeachment of Abolhassan Banisadr by Ayatollah Khomeini, Rajai became the new President.
His tenure lasted only 28 days; Rajai was killed by a suitcase bomb planted by the People's Mujahideen of Iran at a meeting with other Iranian politicians. 71 other Iranian lawmakers were also killed in the bombing of the parliament building, including his handpicked Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar. Ali Khamenei became the new president after the death of Rajai.
