Canby death

The Modoc murdering General Edward Canby in 1873

The Modoc are a Native American people from northern California and southern Oregon in the United States Pacific Northwest. The Modoc were forced into a reservation with the Klamath in 1864, and Captain Jack led a band of Modoc escapees into present-day Modoc County, California to escpae the poor treatment that they had suffered at the hands of the Klamath and US Army. From 1872 to 1873, the US Army fought against Captain Jack's band of Modoc in the Modoc War, which saw the Modoc murder General Edward Canby. The war ended in a US victory, with Captain Jack being hanged for "war crimes" and his followers being exiled to Oklahoma. Today, 600 live in Oregon and 200 in Oklahoma.
