Mitsukane Ishido (1 October 1532 – 27 January 1574) was a samurai of the Oda clan of Owari Province.
Biography[]
Mitsukane Ishido was born on 1 October 1532 in Inazawa, Owari Province to a family of samurai that served the Oda clan as retainers. Ishido rose a force of local farmers to fight for Nobunaga Oda during his campaign against Shingen Takeda in the early 1570s, and in 1574 his unit fought at the Battle of Agematsu. His men fled the field as the Oda army was destroyed by the stronger Takeda army, and Ishido ran on foot with them. Takeda cavalry chased after the fleeing Oda soldiers, as did some naginata-equipped Takeda infantry. Ishido was wounded in the jugular by an infantryman as he ran, with blood spurting out. For minutes, he writhed in pain and rolled around on the field as Takeda soldiers stood above him, and he died of blood loss and suffocation.
