Mitanni was a Hurrian state in northern Syria and southeast Anatolia which existed from 1500 BC to 1261 BC, with Washukanni serving as its capital. It became a regional power after the Hittite destruction of Amorite Babylon, and Mitanni allied with Egypt to resist the Hittites. From 1475 BC to 1261 BC, the Mitanni dynasty ruled over the northern Euphrates-Tigris region, but it eventually succumbed to Hittite and Assyrian attacks and was reduced to being a province of the Middle Assyrian Empire by King Shalmaneser I.
