Mirko Petrovic-Njegos

Mirko Petrovic-Njegos (19 August 1820-1 August 1867) was a Montenegrin general, diplomat, and poet who was Vojvoda of Grahovo and the father of the future King Nicholas I of Montenegro.

Biography[]

Mirko Petrovic-Njegos was born in Njegusi, Prince-Bishopric of Montenegro on 19 August 1820, the older brother of Prince Danilo I of Montenegro and the nephew of Petar II of Montenegro. In 1858, Mirko led the Montenegrin army to a decisive victory over the Ottoman Empire at Grahovac, leading to the finalization of the border between Montenegro and Bosnia Eyalet. He died in 1867, and his son would later become King Nicholas I of Montenegro.
