Mirjana Markovic

Mirjana Markovic (10 July 1942-14 April 2019) was the wife of Slobodan Milosevic and the leader of the Yugoslav Left party.

Biography[]

Mirjana Markovic was born in Pozarevac, Serbia in 1942, the daughter of two communist Yugoslav Partisans, and the niece of Josip Broz Tito's mistress. Her mother was captured and executed by the Germans during World War II. Markovic met Slobodan Milosevic while they were in high school together, and they married in 1965. She became a sociology professor at Belgrade University, and she held hardline communist political views; she was also a feminist. After her husband's arrest in 2001, Markovic went to Russia, and she became the leader of the Yugoslav Left political party. She died in Moscow in 2019.
