Mir-Hossein Mousavi

Mir-Hossein Mousavi (born 2 March 1942) was the last Prime Minister of Iran from 1981 to 1989, succeeding Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani.

Biography[]

Mousavi was born in Khameneh, Iran in 1942 to an ethnic Azerbaijani family, and formerly served as a newspaper editor. In 1981 he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs briefly before becoming the Prime Minister, heading the government. Mousavi was responsible for the changes in the government and exercised the government's decisions, but in 1989 the position of Prime Minister was abolished. He served as President of the Arts until 2009. Mousavi was the leader of the opposition to the government after the 2009 election disputes, and he challenged the rule of the dictator Mahmoud Ahmedinegad, who was very aggressive towards Israel (threatening to wipe them off of the map) and the United States (claiming that 9/11 was a myth invented by the US government). He was placed under house arrest with his wife due to his opposition to the new Iranian regime, and he remains the leader of the Green Movement opposition.
