The location of Mindanao
Mindanao is the second-largest and southernmost major island of the Philippines and a major island group. It includes Maguindanao, Sulu, and Basilan, and Mindanao is considered the "food basket" of the Philippines due to eight out of ten food commodities in the Philippines coming from the island. Since 1969, Mindanao has seen insurgencies by the communist New People's Army and Islamist Moros.
