Noriyori

Minamoto Noriyori (1156-1177) was a general of the Kamakura Minamoto clan and the sixth son of Minamoto Yoshitomo. He was also the brother of Shogun Minamoto Yoritomo.

Biography[]

Noriyori was the sixth son of daimyo Minamoto Yoshitomo, and was the younger brother of Minamoto Yoritomo and older brother of Minamoto Yoshitsune. After his father's death in 1160 during the Heiji Rebellion, he was spared by Taira Kiyomori and raised with his brother. In 1175 he became a general of his brother at the age of 19, and took part in the campaign against the Edo clan. By then, he was made Commissioner for Warfare under his brother Yoritomo, who was daimyo.and he commanded the army in the west. He was responsible for the campaign against the allies of the Taira and Fujiwara along the shore leading to Kyoto, and he died in battle with Ii Yasutomi in Totomi Province after failing to capture Hamamatsu.
