The Milltown Cemetry attack occurred on 16 March 1988 at the Milltown Cemetery in Belfast, Northern Ireland, when Ulster Defense Association volunteer Michael Stone launched a one-man attack against Irish republicans gathering at the funeral of three Provisional IRA members who had been killed by the British Army in Gibraltar. Stone attempted to shoot Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness from a distance with a sniper rifle, but the bullet went above their heads, and he shot at pursuing mourners and lobbed grenades at them as he fled. He killed 3 people and injured over 60, and he was rescued and arrested by the Royal Ulster Constabulary before the IRA could kill him. Stone was sentenced to over 600 years in prison for the attack, but he was released in 2000 under the Good Friday Agreement.
