Militsiya was the name of the national police force in the Soviet Union and subsequently the Russian Federation, prior to reforms in 2011 that renamed the force to politsiya (police). The militsiya (not to be confused with the English word "militia", which has a different translation in Russian) was subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) and divided into regional departments.
