Military Road School

The Military Road School is a historic school located in the Brightwood neighborhood of Washington DC. Named for its location along Military Road, the school was established in 1864 to educate free Blacks. Many African-Americans found employment at the nearby Fort Stevens barracks, and the Military Road School was originally the only school available to Black students in Northwest Washington. From 1911 to 1912, the new building was erected. The school was closed in 1954 and now houses a bilingual public charter school for Latin Americans.
