The Milenio Cartel was a Mexican drug cartel based in Michoacan and Jalisco which existed from 1999 to 2012. The group was founded by Armando Valencia Cornelio at the turn of the millennium; the Valencia family had sold marijuana and opium since the 1970s, having ties to Medellin Cartel lieutenant Fabio Ochoa. In 2003, under Ignacio Coronel Villarreal, the Milenio Cartel became part of the Sinaloa Cartel federation, and it came to operate in the states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Mexico City, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas, where it produced marijuana and heroin. The 2009 capture of Oscar Nava Valencia and the death of Coronel Villarreal led to the fragmentation of the Milenio Cartel, which broke up into La Resistencia and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
