Biography[]

Mike Metcalf was born in 1933, and he joined the US Navy as a naval aviator. He served during the Vietnam War alongside Duke Mitchell, and in 1965 he took part in a mission to fight against North Vietnam too close to the border with Laos, leading to it being classified. During that mission, Mitchell sacrificed himself to rescue other pilots that were in trouble, and only 10 out of 18 American planes returned to base, with Duke dying; ten pilots were killed in the squadron. After the war, Metcalf became a Commander of the US Navy and taught at Top Gun, instructing the best of the best pilots in the navy. One of his students was Pete Mitchell, the son of Duke, and he persuaded him to stay in the Navy to live up to his father's example after Pete considered quitting due to the death of his friend Nick Bradshaw.
