Miguel Maldonado

Miguel Maldonado (1630-1692) was an admiral of the Spanish Navy. Maldonado was the captain of "San Genaro", a Heavy First Rate that patrolled the Caribbean and hunted down pirates.

Biography[]

Maldonado was born in Cartagena in Spain, and became an officer of the Spanish Navy during the Franco-Spanish War in the 1650s, fighting in the Caribbean against the English. Maldonado became a high-ranking official of New Spain, and began a mission to eradicate piracy.

Leading the heavy first rate "San Genaro", Maldonado hunted pirate John Nelly and his frigate "Cuckold" off the south coast of Cuba. Maldonado, using his ship's heavy weaponry, holed "Cuckold" and forced the pirates to flee, winning a victory that would later see Nelly hung in Havana. Maldonado was promoted to Admiral in the aftermath of the fight, and commanded Spanish ships in the hunt against Nassauer, Antiguan, and Curacaoan pirates. He died in 1692 in Cabo de Cruz.
