Miguel I of Portugal (26 October 1802-14 November 1866) was the King of Portugal from 1828 to 1834. He succeeded Queen Maria II of Portugal after overthrowing her, but was overthrown during the Portuguese Civil War and replaced by her.
Biography[]
Miguel was the third son of King Joao VI of Portugal, and the brother of the future Pedro I of Brazil. When his niece Maria de Braganca became Queen of Portugal in 1826 after his brother Pedro (at the time also Emperor of Brazil) renounced his title of King of Portugal. Miguel overthrew Maria II in 1828 and proclaimed himself King of Portugal, supported by Spain, but the United Kingdom and France backed the Liberal army of his brother and niece. He was overthrown in 1834, and died in exile in Esselbach, Wurttemburg.
