Mide, also known as Meath, was an Irish kingdom which existed from the 1st century AD to 1160. Due to the country's location in central Ireland, it was named Mide ("middle"), and County Meath was named for the kingdom. It was ruled by the Clan Colman sept of the O'Neill dynasty, and its ruling dynasty later assumed the surname "O'Feary". Their last king Donnchad mac Domnaill Ua Mael Sechlainn was deposed in 1160, and the O'Melaghlin dynasty of Mide was forced to flee west to the east bank of the River Shannon.
