Middle District Jerusalem

The Middle District was a district of medieval Jerusalem which consisted of the western half of the city (the Christian Quarter in the north and the Armenian Quarter in the south). It was a medium-sized district, and it contained a hospital, a guard tower, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which was founded in 326 CE. The Arab Christian and Armenian communities were middle-class under Muslim rule, as they were spared from the slaughter of the non-Christians during the First Crusade in 1099, and they were allowed to practice their faiths freely. Meanwhile, the Muslims - the dominant group in the city - inhabited its Rich District, while the recently-resettled Jews inhabited the Poor District.
