Michael C. Kerr

Michael Crawford Kerr (15 March 1827-19 August 1876) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-IN 2) from 4 March 1865 to 3 March 1873 (succeeding James A. Cravens and preceding Simeon K. Wolfe) and from IN-3 from 4 March 1875 to 19 August 1876 (succeeding William S. Holman and preceding Nathan T. Carr). He served as Speaker of the House from 6 December 1875 to 19 August 1876 (succeeding James G. Blaine and preceding Samuel J. Randall).

Biography[]

Michael Crawford Kerr was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1827, and he moved to New Albany, Indiana in 1852, served in the state legislatue from 1856 to 1857, and served in the US House of Representatives from 1865 to 1873 and from 1875 to 1876. He was a "War Democrat" who staunchly opposed the Copperheads and supported hard money, but he also staunchly opposed Republican Reconstruction as Speaker of the House from 1875 until his death in 1876.
