Michael Bennet

Michael Bennet (28 November 1964-) was a US Senator from Colorado (D) from 21 January 2009, succeeding Ken Salazar.

Biography[]

Michael Bennet was born in New Delhi, India, the son of Douglas J. Bennet, the President of Wesleyan University from 1995 to 2007 and an aide to the ambassador. The younger Bennet went to Wesleyan University and Yale University, where he gained his juris doctor. Bennet worked for Ohio governor Richard Celeste early in his career, and he became Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General during Bill Clinton's presidency. Bennet also worked for the Anschutz Investment Company, as Chief-of-Staff to Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, and as Superintendent of Denver Public Schools from 2005 to 2009. That year, Governor Bill Ritter nominated him to fill Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar's former seat in the US Senate, and he was re-elected in 2016. In 2019, he announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, running on a green platform. However, he failed to make most of the debates due to low polling, and he dropped out of the race on 11 February 2020 after poor performances at the Iowa and New Hampshire caucuses.
