Miami Beach in 2023 2

Miami Beach is a coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Florida which was incorporated on 26 March 1915. It became a city in 1917, and several beachfront hotels were built in the 1920s. Following World War II, the economic boom brought a wave of immigrants to South Florida from the northern states, and, after the 1959 Cuban Revolution, a wave of Cuban immigrants entered in South Florida, changing the demographic make-up of the area. During the 1980s, South Beach had a high crime rate and several vacant buildings, but gentrification later improved the city's safety. South Beach came to be one of the city's more popular areas, and female toplessness was permitted, despite topless sunbathing not being formally legalized. By the 21st century, Miami Beach was one of the richest commercial areas in the county, but poverty and crime remained in some places near the area. In 2019, Miami Beach had a population of 89,885 people, and it had large populations of Jewish and gay residents.
