
The Mil Mi-24 is a Soviet helicopter gunship that was introduced into service in 1972. It was operated by the Soviet Air Force and its successors, and its first combat use was during the Ogaden War, when the Ethiopian army used Mi-24 gunships against Somalia. The Mi-24 was used extensively during the Soviet-Afghan War, during which it bombed Mujahideen fighters, and there were 120 Mi-24s active in Afghanistan by 1985. 2,648 were built after 1969.
