Biography[]
Mert Ney was born in Marayong, Australia in 1998 to Turkish-Cypriot parents, and he went to high school in Blacktown, a Sydney suburb. He was quiet in high school, but he later converted to Salafi Islam and was influenced by extremist ideas which he stored on a USB stick. At 2:00 PM on 13 August 2019, he stabbed a 24-year-old sex worker to death in her apartment with a butcher knife, and he later attacked another woman in Hotel CBD. He then jumped on the roof of a car while shouting "Allahu Akbar", but an old man confronted him with a chair and shooed him away from innocent civilians. He then ran down York Street and chased several civilians while taunting them to shoot him in the head, and a firefighter and other civilians used chairs and a milk crate to subdue him and pin him down until police could arrive to arrest him.
