Merseyside is a metropolitan county in North West England, bordering Lancashire to the northeast, Greater Manchester to the east, Cheshire to the south and south-east, and the Irish Sea to the west. Merseyside is located on the banks of the Mersey Estuary, and it comprises the metropolitan boroughs of Knowsley, St. Helens, Sefton, Wirral, and the city of Liverpool. The region was famously home to the Merseybeat genre of music during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and iconic pop and rock band The Beatles came from Merseyside. In 2014, Merseyside had a population of 1,406,400 people.
