Merbal (died 394 BC) was a Carthaginian commander who led the garrison army of Motya (Marsala) on Sicily during the Sicilian Wars. In 394 BC, he defended the city from a Syracusan attack in the close Battle of Motya, holding off the Greeks and forcing them to retreat. However, Merbal unwisely led his outnumbered hoplites in a pursuit of the retreating Greeks, who turned and massacred Merbal and all of his bodyguards before withdrawing in good order.
