Menli I Giray

Menli I Giray (1445-17 April 1515) was Khan of Crimea in 1467 (interrupting Nur Devlet's reigns), from 1469 to 1475 (succeeding Nur Devlet and preceding Hayder), and from 1478 to 1515 (succeeding Nur Devlet and preceding Mehmed I Giray).

Biography[]

Mengli Giray was a son of Haci I Giray. He revolted against his older brother Nur Devlet with the support of the Tatar nobility and seized the throne in 1467, again in 1469, and finally in 1478 after the Ottoman Turks deposed their former puppet Nur Devlet. Mengli became a Turkish vassal, but he also allied with Ivan III of Russia against Poland-Lithuania, the Great Horde, and the Khanate of Astrakhan in 1480. From 1489 to 1500, the Tatars repeatedly devastated Podolia and Volhynia. In 1502, Menli defeated the last khan of the Golden Horde and sacked Sarai, claiming the title of Khagan for himself. He died in 1515.
