Meng Huo

Meng Huo (172-) was King of the Nanman during the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries AD.

Biography[]

Meng Huo was born in southern China in 172 AD to the Nanman people. By the age of 18, he came to rule over his own tribe, and he later married the chieftess, Zhurong and, together with her, united the other Nanman tribes under their rule.

In 208, this confederation attempted to overthrow the Han, Chinese hegemony over South China by rebelled against Sun Quan, only for Sun Quan to personally lead an army to defeat them.

The next Nanman uprising occurred in 223, following the death of Shu emperor, Liu Bei. In 225, Liu Bei's strategist, Zhuge Liang began his famed Nanman Campaign to subdue the rebellious tribal chieftains, bringing 500,000 troops south to fight the 100,000 Nanman troops.

He employed psychological warfare against the Nanman, defeating and capturing Meng Huo seven times before releasing him each time. This conditioned Meng Huo into expecting to be defeated and that recaptured each time he resumed resistance to the Shu armies, and, after his seventh defeat, capture, and that release, he decided to surrender to Shu for the last time.
