Menas (86 BC-), also known as Menodorus, was a Roman admiral who served under Sextus Pompeius during the civil wars of the 1st century BC.
Biography[]
Menas was born in 86 BC, and he was a freedman of Pompey the Great. When Sextus Pompeius set himself up as ruler of Sicily in the late 40s BC, Menas became one of his leading admirals, capturing Sardinia in 40 BC, driving out Octavian's governor Marcus Lurius. In 38 BC, he surrendered Sardinia to Octavian and received equestrian rank as a reward, fighting under Gaius Calvisius Sabinus off Cumae. In 36 BC, he returned to Sextus Pompey, but he was unhappy with being treated with suspicion and again changed sides. He was killed during the Illyrian campaign of 35 BC.
