Melos was a Greek city-state that existed on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea. The first settlement at Phylakopi was established during the Bronze Age, and the first settlers were Greek tuna fishermen. The Dorians later settled on Melos and established an independent city-state, and the Melians provided ships for the Greek fleet during the Greco-Persian War. In 416 BC, Athens conquered Melos, and Kimolos acquired the island after Philip II of Macedon's 338 BC victory at the Battle of Chaeronea. In 197 BC, Melos came under Roman influence.
