Melissa Hortman (27 May 1970-14 June 2025) was a DFL member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 4 January 2005 to 14 June 2025 and Speaker of the House from 9 January 2019 to 14 January 2015. Born in Fridley, she was raised in Spring Lake and Andover before practicing law and entering politics. She was an advocate for environmentalism, the right to choose, gun control, and commuter rail, and she taught Catholic Sunday school in Blaine. On 14 June 2025, she and her husband were murdered in their home by far-right extremist Vance Luther Boelter.
