Melchor Iturbide

Melchor Iturbide (1797-) was a Mexican Army colonel who oversaw the foundation of Milagro de Oro in present-day Yavapai County, Arizona in 1839. Iturbide led an expedition to the American Southwest and established a settlement near a gold mine, and he also commanded the army against the Yavapai Native Americans at the Battle of Milagro de Oro, the Battle of Mesa del Sur, and the extermination of the Yavapai villagers. He switched his allegiance to the Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840.
