Meldeburne in 873 AD
Melbourne is a market town in Derbyshire, England, located 8 miles south of Derby and 2 miles from the River Trent. Its Anglo-Saxon name Meldeburne means "mill stream", and it was the site of a Roman Catholic monastery which was sacked by Norwegian Vikings in 873 AD. A parish church was built in 1120, and the royal manor house was fortified as "Melbourne Castle" in 1311. Through Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, Melbourne, Derbyshire was the namesake of the major Australian city of the same name. By 2011, Melbourne had a population of 4,843.
