Mei Zhao was a Chinese restauranteur who lived in the Kabukicho district of Tokyo, Japan during the 2000s. The owner of the Homeland restaurant and the father of Mei Hua, he ran the Asian Gateway charity to help Asian immigrants acclimate to living in Japan. Because the detective Masayoshi Tanimura (himself of half-Thai descent) frequently donated the proceeds from his shakedowns of illicit business owners to Asian Gateway, Zhao helped Tanimura whenever he visited Homeland, giving him a base of operations during the 2010 Tokyo gang war. For that reason, he was briefly kidnapped by the corrupt policeman Satoshi Hisai, only for Hisai to shoot himself rather than harm his colleague's friends. In 2016, Homeland burned down during that year's fire in Little Asia.
