Mehmed I Giray

Mehmed I Giray (30 November 1465-October 1523) was Khan of Crimea from 1515 to 1523, succeeding Menli I Giray and preceding Gazi I Giray.

Biography[]

Mehmed Giray was a son of Menli I Giray, and he participated in a number of his father's raids on Belarus and Russia before becoming khan in 1515. He defeated his brother Akhmed the Lame's Russian-backed rebellion, raided Lithuania and Russia, vassalized the Nogai Horde after the Kazakhs drove them west of the Volga in 1519, and battled the Russian client ruler of the Kazan Khanate Shah-Ali. In 1523, he invaded Astrakhan, but he was assassinated by the Nogai mirza Agish Bey.
