Mehmed IV Giray

Mehmed IV Giray (1610-1674) was Khan of Crimea from 1641 to 1644 (succeeding Bahadir I Giray and preceding Islam III Giray) and from 1654 to 1666 (succeeding Islam and preceding Adil Giray).

Biography[]

Mehmed Giray was a son of Selamet I Giray and a brother of Islam III Giray. He reigned as khan from 1641 to 1644, and he was deposed by his Turkish-backed brother after ravaging Circassia without proper authorization. He was exiled by Islam until 1654, when he - with the backing of Polish mercenary Jerzy Wisniewski - began a rebellion that took back the throne from Islam. Mehmed allied himself with Poland-Lithuania against the Cossack Hetmanate, and the Poles paid the Tatars to invade Ukraine, resulting in a victory over the Russians at the 1659 Battle of Konotop. In 1661, he invaded Transylvania, and, by 1663, the Crimeans were fighting in Moravia and Silesia. He was deposed in 1666 after sending his son to help the Ottomans in Hungary rather than going himself. He retired to Tarki in the North Caucasus and died in 1674.
