Megiddo, also known as Har Megiddo and Armageddon, was an ancient Canaanite city-state and a royal city of the Kingdom of Israel. Megiddo was first settled circa 5000 BC due to its location near a spring, and Megiddo became a large urban center after 1950 BC and enjoyed the peak of its power over its neighbors from 1700 to 1600 BC. The city was conquered by Pharaoh Thutmose III and the Battle of Megiddo in 1457 BC, but the city still prosperted under Egyptian rule. Megiddo became independent from Egypt in 1140 BC, but the city was destroyed by Pharaoh Shoshenq I in 926 BC. The Israelites improved the fortress from 900 to 750 BC, and it was an important city until its destruction by the Arameans in 845 BC. In 732 BC, King Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria conquered Megiddo, and Megiddo fell to Pharaoh Necho II at the Battle of Megiddo in 609 BC. The city was finally abandoned in 586 BC.
