Megaris was a Greek city-state located in western Attica, central Greece. Megaris' inhabitants were known as adventurous seafarers with deceitful propensities, and Megaris controlled the island of Salamis until its loss to Athens in the late 7th century BC. In 460 BC, border disputes with Corinth led to Megaris joining the Delian League, but it would successfully revolt against the league in 445 BC. During the Peloponnesian War, Megaris was an ally of Sparta. In 279 BC, Megaris helped to repulse the Gauls at Thermopylae, and, although Megaris defeated the Macedonians in 266 BC, they were eventually forced to submit to them. In 243 BC, Megaris expelled its Macedonian garrison and joined the Achaean League, later switching to the Boeotian League in 223 BC. In 203 BC, Megaris decided to rejoin the Achaean League, fighting off a Boeotian intervention force. Eventually, Megaris was forced to submit to Roman rule.
