The Media Luna is a half-moon-shaped region of Bolivia, consisting of the departments of Santa Cruz, Beni, Pando, and Tarija. The region was known for opposing the national government of Evo Morales and his Movement for Socialism (MAS), objecting to the nationalization and redistribution of natural gas that was a major natural resource in the province. After 2009, Evo Morales saw increasing support in Pando, while Tarija switched allegiances several times. Unlike the majority-indigenous regions among the Andes mountains, the Media Luna was predominantly mestizo, with significant white minorities.
