McReary gangsters in 2008
The McReary crime family is an Irish Mob family based in New York City. Founded by Richard McReary during the 1960s, the family once controlled Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan and much of Brooklyn, but the expansion of the American Mafia and the Russian Mafia led to the Irish losing power. Gerald McReary took over after Mr. McReary died in 2000. The gang became weak during the early 2000s, with Gerald McReary falling in and out of prison and his cocaine-addicted brother Patrick McReary attempting to lead a gang of spendthrifts. The McReary family ultimately resorted to hiring enforcers of different ethnicities, including African-Americans and Hispanics, in addition to ethnic Irish gang members, and their gang worked with the Pegorino crime family to provide it with muscle in exchange for money. In 2008, after the death of Derrick McReary, Patrick left for California, leaving Gordon Sargent as the leader of the weakened gang. The gang had a strength of hundreds of members, but it held little influence in the city's criminal underworld after most of its leaders were dead, imprisoned, or left New York.
