Mayor Rutger of Graz

Mayor Rutger of Graz (31 December 1299-) was a spymaster of the Holy Roman Empire.

Biography[]

Rutger was born on 31 December 1299 in Graz, Styria, Austria to a family of Christian Germans. Rutger became a spymaster under Emperor Louis IV of Germany, and on 7 July 1339 he was sent to Prague to investigate a plot against his liege's life. King John the Blind of Bohemia had planned to assassinate Louis IV to seize power for himself and his family (the House of Luxembourg), and on 22 September 1339 Louis IV went into hiding as a result of the plot. This prompted John to lead a rebellion to enforce his claim on the empire on 3 November 1339, and the Imperial disaster at the Battle of Merseburg on 2 November 1340 allowed King John to seize power on 4 January 1341.
