
Maximilian de Angelis (2 October 1889 – 6 December 1974) was a General der Artillerie of Nazi Germany during World War II.
Biography[]
Maximilian de Angelis was born on 2 October 1889 in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. He served in World War I on the Italian front and was captured during the war, being given the Honor Cross and Military Merit Medal for his service. In 1920, he joined the Austrian Bundesheer, and Angelis rose in the ranks of the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II. Angelis became the commander of the German 6th Army from 5 March 1943 to 7 April 1944, succeeding Karl-Adolf Hollidt and preceding Maximilian Fretter-Pico. He led the 6th Army at the Dnieper-Carpathian Offensive of early 1944, and on 9 May 1945 he was captured by the US Army. Angelis was imprisoned by Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union until 1955, and he died in 1974 in Graz, Styria, Austria.
