Maxim Volontov (1960-2018) was the Russian SVR section chief in Budapest, Hungary during the 2010s. In 2018, he was executed by the SVR due to the scandal caused by Stephanie Boucher's death.
Biography[]
Maxim Volontov was an SVR section chief who was known to steal credit for any successes achieved under his watch, earning him the scorn of his agents; he was also known to sexually harass his female agents. In 2018, he was frustrated when SVR newcomer Dominika Egorova refused to sleep with him, and he sent an unfavorable report to Moscow about her progress. She tailed him to a strip club and led him to believe that she wanted to sleep with him, but she insulted his "microscopic prick", leading to Volontov punching her in the face. Egorova revealed that their conversation had been recorded, and two SVR officers restrained Volontov as she demanded that he send a favorable report back to Moscow for her, or else she would have him charged with assault. Later, his other agent Marta Yelenova came to him and told him that she had a plan to bring Egorova down; however, Yelenova was murdered by the SVR when the plan involved her revealing that Egorova had told her a classified secret, something which warranted death.
Volontov was later taken with Egorova to London for a major operation: they would convince American political aide Stephanie Boucher to deliver them classified US government information on satellite defense technology in exchange for $250,000. They met at a hotel room which was bugged by the CIA, with which Egorova had been working as a double agent. Boucher delivered the disks, but the disks were swapped out for CIA-supplied floppy disks by Egorova. Volontov and Egorova then left the apartment with the "information", and they told Boucher to leave an hour later so as to avoid suspicion. However, the drunk Boucher left with the money earlier than instructed, and she was spooked when CIA men tried to arrest her; she accidentally stepped into the path of a truck and was killed.

Volontov was called shortly after news arrived that Egorova had been killed, and he was instructed to change course and instead drive to Heathrow Airport for a flight back to Moscow. The two of them reported to Deputy Director Ivan V. Egorov, who had both of them interrogated as to whether or not they had betrayed Boucher to the CIA, or accepted payments. Volontov was shot in the back of the head after denying that he betrayed Boucher, and his death was filmed and shown to Egorova as intimidation; still, she denied, and she was eventually sent back to work,
