The Maute group is a radical Islamist group in the Philippines that operated from 2013 to 2017, led by the brothers Abdullah and Omar Maute. The group consisted of former Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters and some foreign fighters who sought to create an Islamic state in Mindanao, rejecting the group's peace agreement with the Philippine government. In February 2016, its headquarters in Butig was captured by the army, and the group attempted to seize control of the city of Marawi in order to make it the capital of its self-proclaimed Islamic State of Lanao. On 23 May 2017, the Maute group and other Islamist groups assaulted Marawi, and the leaders of the group were killed by the army.
