Maurice Schumann

Maurice Schumann (10 April 1911-9 February 1998) was the Foreign Minister of France from 1969 to 1973, succeeding Michel Debre and preceding Andre Bettencourt. He was a member of the Christian democratic MRP party.

Biography[]

Maurice Schumann was born in Paris, France on 10 April 1911 to an Alsatian Jewish father and a Catholic mother. He converted to Catholicism in 1937 and became involved with Christian democratic politics as a leader of the Popular Republican Movement (MRP) party, serving as its leader for the November 1945 legislative election. Schumann also served in Georges Pompidou's government as Foreign Minister from 1969 to 1973, having become affiliated with the Union of Democrats for the Republic party.
