The Maurice River is a tributary of the Delaware Bay in Salem and Cumberland Counties, New Jersey. The river was named for Prince Maurice of Nassau; a local legend claimed that the Dutch ship Prince Maurice was sunk by the local Lenape Native Americans in 1657, and the river was named for the sunken ship. Its mouth on the Delaware Bay was surrounded by extensive salt marshes and provided a historically important oystering ground, and it was especially pristine for the region.
